![]() ![]() From the student teacher sharing in the interview, I started to realize that reflective writing seems to be turned into a mechanical from of course assignment in my work context, thus defeating its purpose for stimulating and deepening self-exploration and self-inquiry in the complex journey of teacher learning. Such a bitter finding put me into a state of confusion and self-doubt with some critical questions boiling in my head: What went wrong and what should be done? These questions give impetus to this Viewpoint paper, which seeks to problematize current RP in teacher education classrooms and explore possible directions for improvement. As a language teacher educator working in the program, I also shared the belief in the power of reflective practice (RP) however, as suggested by the quote, what I had been practicing in my previous courses might be ineffective at least for some student teachers. Apart from its strong focus on linguistic competence and pedagogical knowledge, the program advocates the cultivation of language teachers’ reflective abilities in supporting their classroom practice and continuing development. ![]() ![]() The student teacher was studying in a pre-service language teacher education program in Hong Kong. The above quote, shared by a pre-service language teacher, stunned me when I first heard it in a research interview in my previous project ( Yuan et al., 2022).
